Tool Mentor: Promoting Project Baselines Using Rational ClearCase

Overview
This Tool Mentor is applicable when running Windows 95/98/NT 4.0.In ClearCase UCM a baseline is an object that typically represents a stable configuration for a component.
UCM baselines are assigned promotion levels that can be used to indicate the quality or degree of completeness of the work represented by a baseline. Typically, the promotion level indicates a level of testing. UCM provides an ordered set of default promotion levels, and also supports user-defined promotion levels.The action of changing the promotion level of a baseline is called promoting or demoting the baseline.
Tool Procedures
There are two procedures for changing a baseline's promotion level. You can:
- Promote a baseline to the promotion level that is the level recommended for use by developers.
- Change the promotion level of one or more baselines to something other than the level specified for recommended baselines.

To promote a baseline to the level specified for recommended baselines:
- In ClearCase Project Explorer, select the integration stream. Click Tools>Recommend Baselines.
To change the promotion level of one or more baselines to something other than the level specified for recommended baselines:
- In ClearCase Project Explorer, select the integration stream. Click File >Properties to display the integration stream's property sheet.
- Click the Baselines tab. In the Components box select the component that contains the baseline you want to promote. In the Baselines box select the baseline. Click Properties to display the baseline's property sheet.
- Click the down arrow in the Promotion Level list to display all available promotion levels. Select the new promotion level. Click OK.
- To change the promotion level of another baseline, select it from the Baselines tab and click Properties. When you are done changing baseline promotion levels, click OK to exit the integration stream's property sheet.
